Verge 2017 – Chimera

At the Window

Kim Waters

The truth is

it’s a boring painting,

one of those impressionistic-

follower types that are going to make you

write lines like:

‘Seated in the open arrival of the day

a woman pauses for company in the too bright

light of the morning.’

And then you get stuck,

your pencil between your teeth,

drawing out words like ‘drinkable,’

‘vessel’ and ‘brimmed.’

You try to be clever and

make something of the clock

ticking beyond the frame,

but like the glassware

on that foreign woman’s table

it’s pretty transparent and

the painting’s not worth

the poem it belongs to.
