Sympathetic White Women Talk Music at Brunch

Audrey El-Osta

I’m the latte, she’s the flat white, thanks. But like,

you have to watch Nicki in the ‘Monster’ video,

because while you can hear her

characters in her verse you have to see

the woman talking to herself, no, selves

to really get how the Harajuku

Barbie is imprisoned by that Roman

Zolanski, you know what I mean? Like Barbie

is meant to be this hyper-feminine

Madonna / virgin / innocent perfect

against Roman, clearly represented

as whore, derelict, sexual, queer, mad

woman in the attic! This inner battle,

this cataclysmic collision of male

and female, the Cockney Creole

and the Queens dialectic crash;

I had the smashed avo, thanks!

Nicki killed that track and proved

that the self is split and blurred along

intersecting identities

acceptance is a battleground between lion, goat, dragon

Sorry, this was meant to be poached.

and victory will be a bloody mess

treading on eggshells of the being born

in the ashes—You’ve lost control of this

metaphor, phoenix or chimera?

—You can’t choose! It’s both, all of the above;

ashes, wreckage, firebomb, split atom

banging big to birth

an absolute, motherfucking, monster!
