The man wearing the white coat asks you: ‘Have you ever taken these before?’ ‘Yes,’ you say. ‘Are you pregnant?’ he asks. ‘No,’ you say. He looks hard at you. ‘But is there any chance you could be?’ he insists. Your neck prickles. You’ve had this conversation too many times. You say to the man: ‘I want to give you something to know.’ But he hands you the packet of pills. He says, ‘Here, take these pills.’ Which is odd, you think—his gesture already implying this instruction. Maybe the man thought he was giving you something to know. When you leave the chemist you pop two of the pills out of the silver packet. You look at them in your palm. You imagine they are the words of the man, ossified. You swallow them with water. You drink much more water than you need to get them down. You bury them in water.
