Verge 2013: Becoming

THE GARDEN

Madeleine Thornton-Smith

Down in the garden

  where we used to go

blistering rain petal wine drops

and aspirin creeper breezes

leapt over our skin and into our hair

We puffed on cat breath cigarettes

and examined purple iris freckles

we gazed at our passports to nowhere

     and picked at salt-dish stew

Down in the garden

     where we used to go

we hid behind the old Datsun and chewed serendipity bubblegum

we listened to blue warbling and underwater bubbles

and smoked red salmon from the pond

We thanked god we weren’t inside

where the fly caught in our bedroom made us anxious

where vacuum cleaner branches sucked clouds through the window

and florescent cough medicine light blinked at the mirror

There Mum’s ladybird telephone never rang

and the sound of headaches echoed through the hallway

fatigue seeped mildew oatmeal through the walls

and greyness threatened to paint out the sky
