Verge 2013: Becoming

UNTITLED

Edwina Sleigh

It is 9:40 on a Monday in Corio

one and a half hours after I had

breakfast in the dining Hall and this will be my

final year of school and I have missed

my first class and maybe I will go to

second period at 10:05 because it is chemistry

and sometimes the world fits where we want it to

I walk down to the Bay and sit on the shore

and eat a packet of tiny teddys I find in my blazer

and then I light a cigarette and smoke half of it

before meandering back through the school gates

where I see a teacher, whose name slips past me

second period has already begun by the time I

get my books and drink some chocolate milk

so I decide chemistry will have to wait until tomorrow

and then a distraught girl with brown hair

stands at the door staring at me for a long time

and I ask her what’s wrong

and she tells me Pato has died

and I stare back at her for a long time

I know there is no truth in her words

because yesterday he was in my room

and last week he kissed me on the lips

and a month ago we went swimming in the bay

so it’s beyond stupid that he could be gone

he just can’t be.
