Verge 2012: Inverse

DEFINITIONS

Amber Beilharz

You were always taught to define

words that expand outwards: tragedy

is a silence rediscovered by lovers

and grief, a constant fever ache of visions:

you lead yourself like a herd. The field of stocky

creatures weaken their stride, their dappled calf

faces hang low as if shamed. Landscape falls,

unwittingly, their hooves hush, balmy flanks heave

and swell, breath thermal against wind.

You lead yourself to your knees, lethargic and empty

and your uncertainty: a metronome swaying

with the creature-heads to the composition of fear.
